Apart from the fact that i started my big weekend on thursday with the Gordon Institute’s Grad Show, Friday night was the launch of ‘Pinned’ over at Boom Gallery. A crazy night where i somehow managed to sell 12 works…Yep, you read that correctly! Not what i was expecting…but more than happy to accept. ūüėČ

Shots of the show @ Boom Gallery below…

A big thanks to Boom and those who continue to support my art by acquiring pieces!

So after having a big night in celebration, I had to be awake and up at Boxhill Hospital to give back to the community and do a makeover of their Adolecent Health Unit with a bunch of other melb artists bright and early. Organised by Doil over at the Melbourne Street Tours some of the other artists included the man himself Doil, Adi, Tad Evil, Rusty, Makatron and some of the boys from the Napier Crew. If there was any fear i was going to fall asleep during the day from the big night, that quickly went away due to the complete…and i mean complete soaking that i got on the way to the hospital.

Anyway, below are some pix from the day once the rain disappeared…

Above: A piece in progress I did with TAD using my Think Tank image.

Below: A couple of overview shots.

And below a couple of my fav pieces from the day, the first one by the boys from Napier Crew and the second by Makatron.

And finally below a few of my NoFrills cans have finally started to hit the streets…

On Sunday the madness continued with the scramble to get ready to go set up a table over at the Charles Street Artist’s Market over in Brunswick. A beautiful day in the sun, lots of great live music and good people. So keep your ear to the ground for the next market which I think is running monthly.

Phew…feel tired just retelling this. Think i will sleep well tonight.

Peace Out…NF!

Somehow on Sunday I managed to get involved in a live drawing session at ACMI for the closing party for the Hola Mexico Film Festival. Arranged by Michael Fikaris, there were a bunch of cool artists and we basically decorated skulls for the film goers to help celebrate the Day of the dead. There was good people…free Mexican beer, food and live music…so how could you not have a good time!

Below is one of my Skulls!

And speaking of the dead…i managed to find myself in the middle of the Melbourne Zombie Shuffle during the daytime which is always a fun time!

If your in Sydney between 4 Nov – 11 Dec, get on over to Paste Modernism 3 an amazing installation of paste ups by urban artists over at Cockatoo Island in the harbour. There is going to be a massive collage combining the work of over two hundred and sixty street artist’s from both Australia and overseas coordinated by Ben Frost. By the way there is also a bunch of other urban art exhibitions going on within the whole island as part of the Outpost project. One not to be missed!

Above is a picture of the paste ups starting to be set up for the exhibition, including one of my ‘Think Tank’ stencil produced paste ups (On the brown paper). I pinched one of the photos (I hope Ben doesn’t mind…all in the spirit of plugging the event!), from the Stupidkrap flickr¬†or you can find out further info on the Paste Modernism¬†site. Also i think after the event they will probably be selling cut down sections from the pasted collage to raise money for charity, last year it helped raise money for those impacted on by the floods in Queensland. So be sure to keep an eye on the Stupidkrap website if you like the work of any of the artists listed below…and what is not to like, there are some amazing names below!

A while back i was invited to take part in an exhibition and publication of artists books dealing with political and social commentary. Well it has finally rolled around. The exhibition is a combination of artist’s book from the Monash University Rare Books Collection and Monica Oppen’s archive based in Sydney, the Bibliotheca Librorum apud Artificern. It is on at Monash Uni’s Clayton Campus(Wellington Rd), lvl 1 ISB Wing – Sir Lewis Matherson Library from 28 Sept – 25 Nov 2011. There are some really cool books on show so get on down to check out the show!

Below: My zines on show in the cabinet, some blow ups of individual pages mounted on the wall and the catalogue/flyer.

And below is the book, ‘A Silent Scream – Political and Social comment in books by artists’. It is a very beautiful publication and the company i’m sharing it with are outstanding. I’m not sure about distrobution, but going to http://www.bibliotheca.org.au and enquiring you will be able to get your hands on a copy. ($39.95 RRP + postage).

So life is good right now, currently working on a large format commission, a fresh publication and exhibition…and i have just had two weeks holiday.

Peace out!

I just found out some of my images have kindly been added to the assemblage wall down at the National Gallery of Victoria’s installation/project space¬†at the moment for the project ‘Inherent Vice’. Put together by M P¬†Fikaris of Silent Army fame…and in collaberoration with Pat Grant, Michael Hawkins, Rebecca Clements, Sarah Howell, Mandy Ord, Simon Haselman¬†and Ben Hutchings. So if your in Melbourne and you have an appreciation for good illustration, comic art and all things small press related, then¬†get on over to the exhibition space and show the artists some love.

The group of 8 artists have taken over the space where everfresh were last month(directly opposite Hosier Lane), and will transform the area into their studio spaces and a group exhibition from July 16 РAugust 14.

It will be open from 10am – 5pm Sun-Wed and 10am – 10pm Thurs-Sat.

It’s well worth a look!

(Sorry about the crappy images, but I only had point and click cam and no flash was allowed.)

Below is the wall where some of my stuff made it! From my zine ‘Seeing Red’.

Flyer below:

In other news the ‘Light Up Geelong’ exhibition that¬†I have a painting in is on for another week or so upstairs in Market Square in Geelong. So go check it out. Peace Out! NF

I recently did some graphic design work for the Plant Meet & Eat festival in Cloverdale. Just because you are getting paid to do something a little more commercial doesn’t mean you can’t hang onto your fundamental aesthetics. As a sideline to the design work for the Community Centre, I got them onto a bit of Guerilla Advertising using stencils and temporary line marking spraypaint.

I also ran an art making workshop with the kids on the day with David Dellafiora

By the way if you missed the festival it had a green focus, free sustainable goods to take home as well as native plants and heaps of free food and drink. It happens once a year so look it up and head down there next year for a fun day!

Next month I’m taking part in a group exhibition putting the spotlight on the Art and Artists of Geelong. Taking over a vacant shop in Market Square the exhibition hopes to be a real spectacular to the point that it will draw large amounts of attention to a need to further focus on promoting and funding the Arts in Geelong. There will be a large amount of artists taking part and a wide range of styles, so there is bound to be something amongst it for everyone.

So help make this statement and come to the opening night:

Light Up Geelong Exhibition

Exhibition Dates: 8th – 31st July, 2011
Opening Night: 8th July, 2011  Time: 5:00pm Р8:30pm

Well, I was pretty excited recently when I picked up a copy of Imprint, an Australian printmaking magazine to find an advert for the exihition The Silent Scream, the political and social comment in books by artists exhibition that I have a few zines in later this year. It’s kinda humbling to see your name in the company of Norman Lindsay, George Grosz and Gerhard Richter to name just a few.

So if your in Melbourne between the 26th September and 25th November …and artist’s books with social comments are your thing, get on over to the Sir Louis Matheson Library at the clayton campus of Monash University to have a look at the exhibition.

Well some pages have started to come in for my latest assemblage artists book Altered State. About five of the thirty-five artists have now got their pages to me and it is already starting to look the goods. This is still early days as I am inviting and negotiating with each artist individually to show respect and to convey a deeper understanding of the project. I expect this will take at least the rest of they year to get blood from a stone…err ūüôā

…to get an edition of 50 hand altered photocopied pages from each artist.

But when it does all come together it should be a beautiful object challenging the notions of zines and artists books, as well as that of art in the age of mechanical reporoduction. This project is not about commerse but rather the exchange of art and ideas with each of the artists gaining a book assembled with each other participating artists works in it.

I have chosen to include about 35 artists to allow the placement of a few in archives and public collections.

Enjoy!

Now for something very different…

For those who were paying attention last year I took part in the Game of Kings, Chess Illustration project set up by Simon Sherry. Well a year has rolled around and now all the pieces are complete and the battle is about to begin. The task this time round was to take the characters designed by one of the other eight illustrators and re-interpret them in your own way based on the Story line by Danny Nolan.

A very tough challenge based on the standard of work by the other artists involved!

Below is a teaser for my scene of the rook wiping out the bishop…

just one of the many illustrated moves written into the story.

So if Chess is your thing, or if your keen to read the writing of Danny and see what some of the new recruits are going to do…especially new works by the likes of artists Nick Ford and Matt Dunn to name a few awesome additions.

You can follow it here: Game of Kings (Redbubble), Blog or website…facebook….twitter…etc
