Boom Gallery

Just a heads up about the launch of BOOM Gallery.

BOOM is a new gallery opening in Geelong (Newtown), launching on August 26 from 5:30 – 8:00 pm. I will have a bunch of never exhibited paintings up for their launch exhibition, along with my stuff will be a bunch of work from other local artists…and artists from further a field. So if your free friday week go check out some cool art…Mark it in your diaries!

New small works

Here are a couple of little mashup images that I have been playing with over the last week. Must say it’s damn cold outside in the studio!

As part of the Illumination project by Courthouse Arts in Geelong, one of my animations of mash up imagary, ‘Mind Control’ was projected large scale (Three Stories high!) onto Custom House in Geelong. It was a short Mash Up film culminating in the following images…

Always good to have a bit of large scale propaganda projected onto a public building!

Seeing Red Zine

Here is the ‘Seeing Red’ zine that I mentioned yesterday. Out now…so if you see me round hit me up for a copy while stock lasts!

Seeing Red – Zine – 8pgs Full Colour, 2011. No Frills Art. (Open Edition)

Inherent Vice

I just found out some of my images have kindly been added to the assemblage wall down at the National Gallery of Victoria’s installation/project space at the moment for the project ‘Inherent Vice’. Put together by M P Fikaris of Silent Army fame…and in collaberoration with Pat Grant, Michael Hawkins, Rebecca Clements, Sarah Howell, Mandy Ord, Simon Haselman and Ben Hutchings. So if your in Melbourne and you have an appreciation for good illustration, comic art and all things small press related, then get on over to the exhibition space and show the artists some love.

The group of 8 artists have taken over the space where everfresh were last month(directly opposite Hosier Lane), and will transform the area into their studio spaces and a group exhibition from July 16 – August 14.

It will be open from 10am – 5pm Sun-Wed and 10am – 10pm Thurs-Sat.

It’s well worth a look!

(Sorry about the crappy images, but I only had point and click cam and no flash was allowed.)

Below is the wall where some of my stuff made it! From my zine ‘Seeing Red’.

In other news the ‘Light Up Geelong’ exhibition that I have a painting in is on for another week or so upstairs in Market Square in Geelong. So go check it out. Peace Out! NF

I recently did some graphic design work for the Plant Meet & Eat festival in Cloverdale. Just because you are getting paid to do something a little more commercial doesn’t mean you can’t hang onto your fundamental aesthetics. As a sideline to the design work for the Community Centre, I got them onto a bit of Guerilla Advertising using stencils and temporary line marking spraypaint.

I also ran an art making workshop with the kids on the day with David Dellafiora

By the way if you missed the festival it had a green focus, free sustainable goods to take home as well as native plants and heaps of free food and drink. It happens once a year so look it up and head down there next year for a fun day!

Light Up Geelong

Next month I’m taking part in a group exhibition putting the spotlight on the Art and Artists of Geelong. Taking over a vacant shop in Market Square the exhibition hopes to be a real spectacular to the point that it will draw large amounts of attention to a need to further focus on promoting and funding the Arts in Geelong. There will be a large amount of artists taking part and a wide range of styles, so there is bound to be something amongst it for everyone.

So help make this statement and come to the opening night:

Light Up Geelong Exhibition

Location: Market Square Geelong…In the empty shop upstairs next to Lincraft
Exhibition Dates: 8th – 31st July, 2011
Opening Night: 8th July, 2011  Time: 5:00pm – 8:30pm
Cost: FREE ENTRY

Well, I was pretty excited recently when I picked up a copy of Imprint, an Australian printmaking magazine to find an advert for the exihition The Silent Scream, the political and social comment in books by artists exhibition that I have a few zines in later this year. It’s kinda humbling to see your name in the company of Norman Lindsay, George Grosz and Gerhard Richter to name just a few.

So if your in Melbourne between the 26th September and 25th November …and artist’s books with social comments are your thing, get on over to the Sir Louis Matheson Library at the clayton campus of Monash University to have a look at the exhibition.

A new little book…

White Noise, 8pgs – 200 x 200 mm, No Frills Art Publications. 2011 (Ed. of 20)

Plus some Think Tank stencil paste ups in the making, so keep your eyes peeled and stay tuned!

Well some pages have started to come in for my latest assemblage artists book Altered State. About five of the thirty-five artists have now got their pages to me and it is already starting to look the goods. This is still early days as I am inviting and negotiating with each artist individually to show respect and to convey a deeper understanding of the project. I expect this will take at least the rest of they year to get blood from a stone…err 🙂

…to get an edition of 50 hand altered photocopied pages from each artist.

But when it does all come together it should be a beautiful object challenging the notions of zines and artists books, as well as that of art in the age of mechanical reporoduction. This project is not about commerse but rather the exchange of art and ideas with each of the artists gaining a book assembled with each other participating artists works in it.

I have chosen to include about 35 artists to allow the placement of a few in archives and public collections.

Enjoy!

Now for something very different…

For those who were paying attention last year I took part in the Game of Kings, Chess Illustration project set up by Simon Sherry. Well a year has rolled around and now all the pieces are complete and the battle is about to begin. The task this time round was to take the characters designed by one of the other eight illustrators and re-interpret them in your own way based on the Story line by Danny Nolan.

A very tough challenge based on the standard of work by the other artists involved!

Below is a teaser for my scene of the rook wiping out the bishop…

just one of the many illustrated moves written into the story.

So if Chess is your thing, or if your keen to read the writing of Danny and see what some of the new recruits are going to do…especially new works by the likes of artists Nick Ford and Matt Dunn to name a few awesome additions.

You can follow it here: Game of Kings (Redbubble), Blog or website…facebook….twitter…etc

I have been handing these new zines out for free lately. They are basically taking a dig at consumerism. So keep you eyes peeled round town for one!

I have been stuck indoors a lot lately so i haven’t got out to do much outside…so i have been doing some new works for walls of the inside variety. Heading towards an exhibion at some point.

Anyway, here are a few i have been working on.

enjoy!
