Art in Geelong

My recent group show at Oxide Gallery with Glen Fry and Kerry Russell has been given a bit of a review over at the Art in Geelong blog. So if you wish to have a look at a few of the works from the show get on over to the blog. While your there be sure to have a browse around the site as Deirdre Carmichael has been putting in some serious effort to document exhibitions and the work of Geelong Artists. (Thanks Deirdre!)

So go visit: artingeelong.com

The exhibition went well, the show looked good and i sold one piece with another looking like it might sell. Considering I only had five works in the show, a pretty good saturday arvo. Thanks to all those people who dropped in!

Swoon in Melbourne

A night on the town…

If you haven’t already heard the buzz new york based street art star Swoon is in Melbourne for an exhibition at Metro Gallery. I was lucky enough to meet her this week and got to go on a little run around melb on thursday night with her and a few others.

No Frills Toxic Mickey meet Swoon – Hosier Lane

This one above was the first one i came across before i got to meet her. Looks like Mickey has seen better days!

Swoon unrolling the goodness…massive woodcuts with intricate handcut backgrounds designed to really make the pieces become one with the environment.

Getting messy wheatpaste style.

On the wall…AC/DC lane Melbourne

There were a few people getting up or helping out including HAHA, Vexta, Drab, Junky and Tonez.

HAHA getting down with the wheatpaste.

Drab doing what he does so well – Tatterstalls Lane

And finally a small one of mine going up in AC/DC  lane…

Thanks Ms Tonez for the above pic.

Subtle Stealth Bomber pasted to the wall.

All up it was a really good session, Swoon was really nice btw…and we all got to change the walls of melbourne for a little while. And if your in melbs drop in to Until Never Gallery and see Shida’s first Melb Exhibition…it is awesome and well worth visiting.

Until next time….enjoy!

The Silent Scream

I just recieved news confirming that i have my artist books/zines being included in an exhibition this September at Monash University in Melbourne. The exhibition and and the accompanying publication is going to be called, The Silent Scream: political and social comment in books by artists. The exhibition is a joint project between Monash University Rare Books Library (http://www.lib.monash.edu.au/rare/) and the Bibliotheca Librorum apud Artificem (http://www.bibliotheca.org.au) a private collection of precious books based in New South Wales by Monica Oppen.

It’s pretty exciting news, and it feels good to have the books considered within a conceptual context…so stay tuned for further information later in the year.

ps- Below is my latest artist book just out.

I am Typewriter

This weekend was the “I am Typewriter” festival and zine fair. The fair presented by Sticky Institute was in the degraves street underground and saw a large number of both stall holders(Over 40 tables!) and audience. I shared a table with David of Field Study, and combined we moved a descent amount of alternative and small press publications. The day saw the first outing for my new sticker packs, Sample/New World Order/Dismay zines and a bunch of new badge designs. The audience were great, i met a bunch of great new crew and overall the day was a huge success.

2010 in review

Well, looking back at 2010 it was a good year art wise for me. I started the year with work up in the $10,000 BSG Art Prize in Melbourne (Unfortunately, I didn’t take home the prize money!), I was in a further seven exhibitions over the year and finished up the year with work in the Fit to Print Exhibition at No Vacancy Gallery, where I sold seven prints. Another highlight for the year was being selected for the Sweet Streets – street art exhibition at 1000pound bend, where I also sold my painting along with five more prints. In the course of the year I managed to see some of my stickers get used on the cabinets at the National Gallery of Australia for their Space Invaders – Australian Street Art Exhibition, which was pretty nice!

Two thousand and ten also saw me really get back into the swing of painting again, completing over 30 paintings for the year. And in the later half I was invited by two new galleries starting in 2011 to show work with them (One in Melbourne and one in Geelong). Commercially, I undertook a few projects including doing all the design work for the Click Clack project, a sound and performance project doing shows at Footscray Community Arts and Fortyfive Downstairs. This resulted in two runs of rock posters around Melb, a further folding poster/booklet and a CD using my images. I also coordinated the Street Salon project for the Geelong Arts Alliance with David Dellafiora, presenting an exhibition of around 150 works during the UCI bike trials in a shop front in Geelong.

I continued creating my No Frills zines with a further 4 or 5 getting made over the year. I also sold a back catalogue of these to an archive in Sydney…which always helps fund further publications. I slowed down a bit on the T-Shirt designing which I enjoy, but still managed to shift more than 200 tees through my online store. Two hundred more minions spreading my messages on their chests sound pretty damn good to me! 😉

Health wise was probably the biggest downer for the year, my immune system played up and I also managed to tear a muscle about 70% of the way through in my calf keeping me out of action for a fair bit. This all paled into insignificance though, when I found out that my mum would be battling cancer and going through chemo. But things are looking up across the board and fingers crossed they will continue too!

So on that note let’s hope 2011 holds positive things ahead, good health for all and creativity aplenty.

I have been a bit quiet of late due to an injury slowing me down and a serious illness in the family being a focus of my time. Anyway, here are a few pasters up in Melbourne…generally round Hosier. Enjoy!

Toxic Mickey

Small Terrorist

Brumby…this one actually went up round the time of the election.

The Raven

Words are Weapons Mash up

We are the real Pests

I also threw a few of these Terrorists mugshots up for Prefab 77, a collective from US now living in the UK…while i was out and about to give  them a presence in melbs. So if you don’t know there stuff go look em up…they do massive paste ups on the whole side of buildings!

and finally here are a few of my new stickers…

I got my hands on one of the CD’s recently that they used my artwork on for the Click Clack Project. Below is a few pix of it…and further down are some photos of the posters for The Mountain which is a part of the click clack project. BTW…if your into your experimental and found sound get along to The Mountain at 45 downstairs next week (15-18 Dec 2010). Further info available here>>

Some recent art…

Here are a couple of pieces i have thrown together lately. Kinda just experimenting at the moment with a few techniques.

NF branded can – Paster on canvas(60x70cm). Thinking i might hit this one with some resin next!

NF Skull Logo – stencil on canvas (60x60cm). Trying to sand this one back to give it an aged look.

USB skull – Stencil on Canvas (40x60cm). Just another variation on this stencil that i have had on here a few times.

I have a bunch of archival digital pigment prints for sale in a group show titled  Fit to Print, coming up on Thurs 9th Dec. (Opening Night) through to the 23rd Dec. at No Vacancy Gallery in Melb(QV building). There should be five of my prints on display including my ‘Horseplay – print’ which is on sale for the first time…In an edition of 25.

So if your keen get along to the show and have a look or buy some art… there will also be a bunch of other really cool artists on show including Beastman, Braddock, Ghostpatrol, Miso and Twoone to name just a few. So don’t miss it!

Horseplay – 40 x 55 cm – Archival Pigment Print on 300gsm Rives Paper – Edition of 25

For every print sold over $20 the gallery will donate $2 to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.

Recently i did some graphic design for Melbourne sound company JOLT. They create experimental and found sound combined with orchestral music. There recent project over the weekend at Footscray Community Arts Centre was a free gig where the sound was made with Jolt artists as well as the Amplified Elephants, a disability sound group from melb as well as Noise Scavengers a youth based group founded at the Cloverdale Community Centre in Geelong. Those who follow my work may recognise my elephant in the gas mask…as i was told to do my thing and use my artwork within the design…which is always the best kind of graphic design!

So if your out and about in melb keep your eyes peeled for my elephant billposters, there should be 500 round town. There will also be a cool poster coming out soon with a vulture on a pile of electrical and white goods…also featuring a TV with a mash up of Charles Manson and a Buddha! So keep your eyes peeled!

There is also another gig coming up in december at 45 downstairs, in Melbourne.

Visit there site for further details on times, dates and prices >>

Above is one of the A5 catalogue/books that folds out into a poster.

Space Invaders is an exhibition now open at the NGA in Canberra. It is probably one of the most important exhibitions relating to street art that has been seen in Australia. It gives the artform some real respect and places it into a serious art context. So if this is your thing and you can get up there it will be well worth the effort.

Below is a link to a story about the exhibition off the ABC…in it you can see one of my ‘Think Tank’ stickers on display up there.

National Gallery showcases street art – ABC Canberra – Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Here is my new print, “Ceci n’est pas un Banksy”.  Sold a few of these over at the Sweet Streets festival. It’s just a bit of a piss take on how anything using a stencil is called a Banksy. What about Blek? …among others!

Anyway, this was originally made just as a tongue in cheek image for a friend…originally titled, “The treachery of copyright images”. Looks sweet in the flesh…a solid and lush deep flat blue to it.

Email me if you want one…going for about $70 AUD (plus postage).
